BARRY SHIFFMAN (violin, viola), from Canada, has a rich and varied career as a performer, recording artist, teacher, and administrator. As a soloist, he has appeared with orchestras and in recital throughout North America, Europe, and Japan. Recent engagements include his debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Disney Hall and a concert tour of Northern California as soloist with the New Century Chamber Orchestra. A member of the St. Lawrence Quartet from 1989 to 2006, he performed over 2,000 concerts during his years with the ensemble, including over 200 appearances on the stage of the Dock Street Theatre during Spoleto Festival USA. Since the fall of 2006, Shiffman has been director of music programs at The Banff Centre and executive director of the Banff International String Quartet Competition in Alberta, Canada. He was recently appointed Associate Dean and Director of Chamber Music at the Glenn Gould School in Toronto and will take up this new position in the fall.
